Different Types of Screening

In compliance with AS/NZS 4308:2008

Saliva Drug Screening

Saliva screening takes between 5 and 10 minutes to complete and is a seven panel test. Results are produced within 10 minutes of completing the test.

Saliva screening will detect the presence of drugs affecting the individual has less privacy implications and is more readily accepted by the unions. Saliva screening have a shorter window of drug detection than urine testing. In general, saliva tests can identify substances taken less than 24 hours before the test and cannabis taken fewer than 4 hours before the test.

Urine Drug Screening

Urine screening takes between 10 and 15 minutes to complete and is a six panel test. Urine screening is ideal for detecting mid-short term drug use and is the most preferred method of workplace drug screening due to traces of drugs staying longer in urine.

Urine screening detects certain drug classes over a longer period. For example, urine testing will detect THC the active ingredient in marijuana after a considerably longer period has elapsed from the ingestion of the drug compared to Saliva testing.

Hair Follicle Screening

Hair follicle screening takes 20 minutes to complete and 5-7 business days for results to be received.

Hair follicle screening is ideal for long term suspected drug or alcohol use. A small portion of hair (the thickness of a pencil or little finger) is taken from the crown of the head, as close to the scalp as possible. An absolute minimum needed to complete this test is 3cm of hair (4cm preferred).

Hair follicle testing is harder to interfere with and is generally free from manipulation. Hair follicle testing is able to detect drugs and alcohol several months in the past, to the last point of substance intake and potentially beyond depending on the amount of hair taken.

Different Methods of Conducting Testing

Random Drug Testing

Sites are visited randomly in compliance with the written instructions and following the method documented in the policy to randomly select workers from the total pool of people onsite, then conduct testing in compliance with all relevant standards.

Incident Response or for “Cause” Testing

This is testing carried out after an incident (or near miss) which involves testing anyone involved in the incident (or near miss) and can also be carried out when management has formed the view a worker may be affected by Drugs or Alcohol (after properly documenting the observations).

Return to Work Testing

Following a confirmed positive test result, the worker and if applicable with union representation, and subject to the policy wording the worker agrees to follow a schedule of testing onsite.

Blanket Testing

Testing of all workers and contractors at a site at the time testing is undertaken. It is suggested that all sites have this carried out as a minimum once per year.

Duration

  • 15 Minutes per person.
  • Results delivered to nominated representative within 1 hour.
  • 25 minutes per person if confirmation testing is required.
  • Within 24 hours for lab confirmation results to be delivered.
  • Results handed over to nominated representative with 1 hour of becoming available.
